Synopsis
Gintama Story Arcs, Seasons 1-5
Gintama has a lot of story arcs. Because Gintama is a comedy, as opposed to a serious drama series, some of these ‘arcs’ are only two episodes long. It’s never a good idea for comedy to dwell on any one subject for too long.
Also, by definition, there really shouldn’t be any such thing as a one-episode story arc. (Arcs are supposed to link together two or more episodes.)
So, not all Gintama episodes are represented in the following story arc list. Because of the huge number, we’ve divided up and organized our list by season:
Gintama Season 1: Memory Loss (31-32); Umibozu (40-42)
Gintama Season 2: Infant Strife (51-52); Mother (54-55); Benizakura (58-61); Fuyo (69-71); Yagyu (76-81); Hardboiled Detective (84-85); Okita Mitsuba (86-87); Hasegawa Prosecution (94-95); Owee (98-99)
Gintama Season 3: Shinsengumi Crisis (101-105); Guardian Dog (107-108); Ryugujo (115-118); Monkey Hunter (121-123); Correspondence (126-128); Kintaro (129-130); Ghost Ryokan (131-134); Yoshiwara in Flames (139-146); Shinsengumi Death Game (148-149)
Gintama Season 4: Barber (151-152); Otsu (157-163); Tama Quest (167-170); Red Spider (177-181); Character Poll (182-184); Rokkaku (186-187); Kabukicho Stray Cat (190-192); Diviner (195-199); Santa (200-201)
Gintama Season 5: Timeskip (202-203); Glasses (207-208); Kabukicho Four Devas (210-214); Jugem (221-222); Jail (225-226); Love Choriss (228-229); Renho (232-236); Vacation (237-238); Scandal (239-240); Host Club (241-242); Thorny (244-247)
Gintama Story Arcs, Seasons 6-10
Although there were some serious arcs near the beginning of the series (such as the Benizakura arc), Gintama starts to get more serious toward the end. Shogun Tokugawa Shige Shige and former Shogun Tokugawa Sada Sada are introduced in season 6.
At the end of season 7, the Shinsengumi face some serious challenges in the Shogun Assassination and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs. The season ends with the group officially disbanded. (This echoes what happened in real life, where the Shogun-supporting Shinsengumi found themselves on the wrong side of history.)
Season 8 also has a somewhat more serious side, as the main cast ends up fighting various battles on the planet Rakuyo (Kagura’s birthplace). The Silver Soul arc (season 10) continues this story with the Earth taken over, and various factions fighting back.
Gintama Season 6: Kintama (253-256); Courtesan of a Nation (257-261); Beam Sword Style (262-264)
Gintama Season 7: Frozen Time (266-267); Patriot Reunion Party (271-272); Dekoboko (275-277); Shinigami (279-281); Confessional (283-284); Soul Switch (287-289); Kaientai (290-291); Afro (294-295); Feigned Illness (296-297); Shogun Assassination (300-307); Farewell, Shinsengumi (308-316)
Gintama Season 8: Rakuyou Decisive Battle (317-328)
Gintama Season 9: Kagura’s Boyfriend (329-330); Homeless (331-332); Excalibur (334-336); HDZ48 (337-339)
Gintama Season 10: Silver Soul (342-369)
Gintama Filler Episodes List
Here’s all the Gintama filler episodes: 1-2, 50, 57, 75, 106, 114, 124-125, 135, 137, 150, 155, 164, 166, 171, 173-174, 176, 185, 209, 252.
Episodes 75, 125, 150, 209, and 252 are recap episodes. The Character Poll arc (episodes 182-184) sounds like it ought to be filler, but it is based upon the manga’s character popularity poll.
The Sket Dance crossover episode (227) is also not labeled as filler as there was a Sket Dance chapter of the manga.
